I Learned Reiki Years Ago and Haven’t Used It. Did I Lose It?

You learned Reiki years ago. You practiced for a while. Then life happened.

Maybe you changed jobs. Raised kids. Took care of parents. Moved. Got busy. Got tired. Put the manual on a shelf and somehow a few months became a few years.

Now Reiki has been nudging at you again and you’re wondering, did I lose it?

In the Reiki tradition I teach, no, you didn’t lose your Reiki training because you stopped practicing.

You just might feel a little rusty is all. Rusty doesn’t mean gone. It’s still there. Reiki didn’t get lost or run away from home.

Think about anything you haven’t done in a long time.

The first time back to Reiki may feel awkward. You may not remember the hand positions in order. You might stare at a symbol and think, I know this. Why can’t I remember this?

That doesn’t mean the learning disappeared. It means you haven’t used it lately.

Start smaller than you think you should

This is where some might make returning harder than it needs to be.

They decide that if they’re going to come back to Reiki, they should restart a perfect daily practice, review every page of every manual and remember everything immediately.

Good luck with that.

Progress, not perfection, is the goal.

Put your hands on yourself and that can be the whole first step.

A few minutes. One hand position. That’s progress.

Go back to your notes

Pull out the old manual. Read through it. See what comes back.

You may be surprised by what comes back as soon as you start reading.

You may also notice things you understand differently now because you’re not the same person who took that class.

Feel free to ask basic questions again

You don’t lose the right to ask questions because your certificate has an old date on it.

If you can’t remember something, ask.

If your teacher isn’t available, find a Reiki community or teacher whose approach feels grounded and supportive.

A Reiki Share can be a great place to reconnect because you get to be around other people practicing without needing to show up as the expert in the room.

You don’t have to start over

You may want a refresher class, mentoring, or a chance to sit in on training again because you learn differently now.

Returning doesn’t mean erasing everything and beginning from zero. You’re reconnecting with something you already learned.

Start with a few minutes of Reiki on yourself.

If you want to work with paying clients again, take time to review what you learned and practice with people who agree to receive. Ask questions about anything you’re unsure of, including consent, boundaries, and offering a session.

You don’t have to rush that part.

What if you don’t feel anything anymore?

Then start there too.

Maybe your hands used to tingle and now they don’t. Maybe Reiki once felt obvious and now it feels quiet.

You don’t need to force a sensation to prove Reiki is still there.

Notice what’s actually happening now instead of comparing every experience to what happened years ago.

Maybe this is exactly the right time to come back

People change.

Your life changes.

The reason you learned Reiki the first time may not even be the reason you want it in your life now.

That’s okay.

You don’t have to return as the person you were when you took the class. Come back as the person you are today.

Open the manual. Put your hands on yourself. Ask the question. Show up at the Share.

Start where you are.
