Is My Chakra Blocked? Or Is Life Just Life-ing Right Now?

My throat chakra must be blocked.

My heart chakra is closed.

My root chakra is completely out of balance.

Maybe.

Or maybe you had a shitty week.

Maybe you’re exhausted.

Maybe you avoided a conversation you really needed to have.

Maybe you’ve been taking care of everyone else and forgot that you were also on the list.

Maybe life is just... life-ing right now.

So how do you know the difference?

Sometimes, you don’t.

And I don’t think you necessarily need to.

You don’t have to decide immediately whether what you’re experiencing is a “blocked chakra” or simply life happening.

Start with what you actually know.

You’re exhausted.

You’re avoiding a conversation.

You don’t feel grounded.

You keep second-guessing yourself.

You’ve been giving and giving and not receiving much of anything back.

That’s useful information.

Notice what is actually happening before deciding what it means.

A blocked chakra does not mean something is wrong with you.

I think this is where chakra language can often become unnecessarily intimidating.

We hear the word blocked and immediately imagine something that needs to be cleared, fixed or repaired.

Like energetic plumbing.

Root Chakra blocked. Call a spiritual plumber immediately.

That’s not how I look at it.

When I talk about a chakra being blocked or out of balance, I’m talking about an area where energy may not be flowing as freely as it could.

More importantly, it gives us somewhere to pay attention.

It isn't a diagnosis.

It isn't a permanent condition.

And it certainly isn't a declaration that there's something wrong with you.

Life doesn't stay perfectly balanced

Neither do we.

There are going to be times when you feel grounded, secure and completely capable of dealing with whatever comes next.

And there will be days when one unexpected bill, one ridiculous email and somebody cutting you off in traffic feels like approximately three things too many.

This is being human.

Sometimes you'll communicate clearly and confidently. And sometimes you'll walk away from a conversation and spend the next two hours thinking about all the things you should have said.

Sometimes your creativity flows. And sometimes you stare at a blank page like you've never had an original thought in your life.

Sometimes your heart feels wide open. And sometimes you're protecting it with everything you've got.

That doesn't automatically mean you're broken. It can simply mean something is happening.

The chakra system gives us a framework for getting curious about what could be happening.

So what does “blocked” actually mean?

When I use the word blocked, I’m not talking about something being completely shut down or clogged up.

I’m using it as a simple way of describing a chakra that may be out of balance or where energy may not be flowing as freely as it could.

That’s the interpretation.

What I can actually notice are patterns. Maybe the same issue keeps showing up. Maybe something feels harder than it usually does. Maybe one particular area of your life keeps asking for attention.

For me, that’s an invitation to look closer.

Not panic. Not diagnose. Just look closer.

The seven main chakras are traditionally associated with different areas of our energetic experience. So if something keeps showing up in one particular part of your life, a chakra can give you another lens through which to explore it.

Root Chakra

The Root Chakra is connected with grounding, stability, safety and our sense of having solid ground beneath us.

So maybe you've been feeling unsettled. Everything feels uncertain. Home doesn't feel particularly restful.

Money has been weighing on you. Life feels like it's changing faster than you can get your feet underneath yourself.

Does that automatically mean your Root Chakra is blocked?

No.

It means there may be something worth noticing there.

Sacral Chakra

The Sacral Chakra brings us into connection, pleasure and flow.

Maybe everything has started feeling like another item on the to-do list. You're getting things done. You're being productive. You're handling life.

And when was the last time you did something simply because you enjoyed it?

That's an interesting question.

You don't necessarily need to answer it with, my Sacral Chakra is blocked.

You could start with, huh. I haven't made much room for that lately.

It’s simply information.

Solar Plexus Chakra

The Solar Plexus is connected with confidence, personal power, choice and how we show up in our own lives.

Maybe you keep second-guessing yourself. Maybe you're asking everybody else what they think before you ask yourself. Maybe you know exactly what you want to say but you keep backing away from it.

Maybe you've spent so much time working to keep everyone else happy that you've lost track of what you actually want.

Again, notice.

You don't have to immediately fix anything.

Heart Chakra

The Heart Chakra is where we explore love, compassion, connection, giving and receiving and acceptance of self and others.

In my experience, I’ve noticed that people are often excellent at giving and absolutely terrible at receiving.

Help? “No, I'm good.”

A compliment? Deflect it.

Someone offers to do something for you? “Oh no, don't worry about me.”

Sound familiar?

Maybe your Heart Chakra needs attention.

Or maybe you've simply spent years learning that your role is to take care of everyone else.

Either way, there's something interesting there to explore.

Throat Chakra

The Throat Chakra is connected to creativity, communication, expression and speaking your truth.

This does not mean that every sore throat is your body telling you you're refusing to speak your truth.

Sometimes a sore throat is a sore throat. (Please go see your healthcare provider when appropriate too!)

Energetically, though, we can ask different questions.

  • Are you saying what needs to be said?

  • Are you communicating clearly?

  • Are you constantly swallowing what you actually think because keeping the peace feels easier?

Or perhaps the opposite is true.

  • Maybe you're talking a lot but not actually saying what matters.

That's where the reflection becomes useful.

Third Eye Chakra

The Third Eye is often associated with intuition, awareness and perception.

For me, this isn't about turning yourself into some sort of psychic superhero. It can be much simpler.

  • Are you paying attention?

  • Do you notice that little nudge and immediately talk yourself out of it?

  • Do you trust your own observations?

  • Can you tell the difference between what you're actually noticing and the story you're building around it?

That matters.

Notice first. Figure it out later.

Crown Chakra

The Crown Chakra brings us into connection, meaning and our relationship with something larger than ourselves.

What that means will look different for different people.

For one person, that may be spirituality. For another, nature. Faith. Community. Purpose. Stillness.

The question isn't whether you're doing spirituality correctly.

It's whether you feel connected to something beyond the constant noise of everyday life.

What if more than one chakra feels “off”?

Welcome to the club. Adulting can have us feeling off more than we’d like.

We as humans can get complicated.

If you're worried about money, you may feel less grounded.

That stress may affect your confidence.

Your confidence may affect how you're communicating.

That may influence your relationships.

And now, we're reflecting on Root, Solar Plexus, Throat and Heart Chakras. Ugh. Exhausting.

Remember we're not seven completely separate boxes stacked on top of one another.

Everything affects everything else.

This is why I don't particularly love the idea of taking an online quiz that announces Congratulations! Your Heart Chakra is blocked.

It can be a starting point, although it’s not the whole story.

So how do you know which chakra needs attention?

Well, start with your actual life. Not the chart.

Ask yourself, What keeps coming up?

  • Where do you feel stuck?

  • What conversation are you avoiding?

  • What feels harder than it used to?

  • Where are you constantly overriding yourself?

  • What are you craving more of?

  • What are you getting too much of?

  • What feels really good right now?

And remember, this isn't only about looking for problems. Pay attention to what is working, too.

Maybe you're feeling more confident than you have in years. Notice that.

Maybe you've finally started setting boundaries. Notice that.

Maybe you are speaking up for yourself. Notice that.

Maybe you're allowing somebody else to take care of you for once. Definitely notice that.

Balance isn't only about finding what's wrong.

It's also about recognizing what's grown.

And then what?

Start by working with what you notice.

That might mean Reiki. If you’d like some space to pause and notice what’s happening for you, learn more about receiving Reiki. You don’t need to arrive with a chakra diagnosis.

It might mean meditation. Journaling. Breathwork. A walk. A conversation you've been avoiding. Creating something. Resting. Setting a boundary. Asking for help.

Or simply carrying the awareness with you for a few days and seeing what else you notice.

You can also use physical anchors. You may find it helpful to have crystals, bracelets, essential oils, chakra sprays or colours as reminders of what you're exploring.

The bracelet doesn't fix the chakra. The crystal isn't doing your personal growth for you. And unfortunately, spraying yourself with a chakra spray doesn’t mean you don’t need to have that difficult conversation.

These are all simply tools in your toolbox. Reminders of ways to bring your attention back to noticing and reflecting.

Resist the urge to diagnose. It is incredibly human to want an answer. You notice something and your brain immediately wants to explain it. That’s it! My heart chakra must be blocked. That’s why this is happening.

Well, maybe.

Get curious. Ask questions. Reflect.

Start where you are.
