What Does Food Have To Do With Your Chakras?

More than you might think.

We often talk about using crystals, essential oils, affirmations, meditation and Reiki to support our chakras. Food can be another simple way to support them, and it is something most of us interact with several times every day.

Food was part of my work long before Reiki became the centre of what I do. I studied holistic nutrition, trained as a Holistic Lifestyle Coach, taught holistic nutrition across Canada for years, and even wrote In One End and Out the Other: A Straightforward Guide to Everyday Nutrition.

So, bringing food and chakras together feels pretty natural to me.

How does food come into chakra work?

Let’s start with colour.

If you’ve spent any time around chakra work, you’ve probably seen the rainbow.

Root is represented by red.

Sacral by orange.

Solar Plexus by yellow.

Heart by green and/or pink.

Throat by blue.

Third Eye by indigo.

Crown by violet or white.

Those colours give us a simple way to begin choosing foods that can support each chakra.

It’s similar to the way we work with crystals.

We might choose green aventurine when working with the Heart Chakra, or sodalite when working with the Third Eye.

Food gives us another option.

Leafy greens can support the Heart Chakra. Deep blue and purple foods can support the Third Eye. Yellow foods can support the Solar Plexus.

Food becomes another tool you can use alongside Reiki, crystals, essential oils, affirmations and other chakra practices.

There is no chakra food police-approved grocery list

You have choices.

You don’t need to eat an orange because you’re working with your Sacral Chakra.

Maybe you hate oranges. Don’t eat them.

Instead, choose carrots. Squash. Sweet potatoes. Peaches. Or orange peppers.

There are lots of ways to work with each colour, and the food you choose should still be food you actually want to eat.

The point is not to memorize a list of colored foods that belong to a chakra.

If you want to, learn the basic associations. Look at your choices. Then choose foods you actually enjoy.

What foods can support each chakra?

Root Chakra | Red

The Root Chakra is connected with grounding, stability, safety and belonging.

Red foods can help support the Root Chakra.

Think strawberries, raspberries, cherries, tomatoes, red peppers, watermelon, red apples and beets.

Sacral Chakra | Orange

The Sacral Chakra brings us into feelings, creativity, pleasure and connection.

Orange foods can help support the Sacral Chakra.

Think oranges, carrots, pumpkin, squash, sweet potatoes, peaches, apricots and orange peppers.

Solar Plexus Chakra | Yellow

The Solar Plexus is connected with confidence, personal power, choice and self-trust.

Yellow foods can help support the Solar Plexus Chakra.

Think pineapple, yellow peppers, corn, bananas, lemons and yellow squash.

Heart Chakra | Green

The Heart Chakra invites us to explore love, compassion, connection, giving and receiving.

Green foods can help support the Heart Chakra.

Think leafy greens, broccoli, asparagus, zucchini, avocado, kiwi, green apples and pears.

Throat Chakra | Blue

The Throat Chakra is connected with communication, creativity, expression, listening and speaking your truth.

Blue foods can help support the Throat Chakra.

Nature gives us fewer naturally blue foods, so blueberries are an easy place to begin.

Third Eye Chakra | Indigo

The Third Eye is associated with intuition, awareness and perception.

Deep blue, indigo and purple foods can help support the Third Eye Chakra.

Think blackberries, blueberries, purple grapes, plums, eggplant and purple cabbage.

Crown Chakra | Violet or White

The Crown Chakra brings us into connection, meaning and our relationship with something larger than ourselves. I think of it like my connection to Spirit or Universe.

Violet and white foods can help support the Crown Chakra.

Think purple cauliflower, purple potatoes, cauliflower, garlic, onions and mushrooms.

Do you need to eat all seven colours every day?

No. Meal planning is challenging enough without feeling obligated to put seven colored foods into each meal.

You certainly don’t need to create an entire chakra menu or stare into the refrigerator wondering which chakra needs broccoli.

How can you use food to support your chakras?

Start with what is actually going on in your life.

Maybe confidence has taken a hit lately. Add some yellow foods to your meals.

Maybe communication has been difficult. Add blueberries to breakfast.

Maybe you’ve been working with your Heart Chakra. Add more green foods for a while.

Maybe creativity and pleasure have taken a back seat lately. Bring more orange foods into your meals.

Maybe you simply notice that you have been eating the same five things on repeat and decide you want a little more colour and variety.

There isn’t one correct way to do this.

Food is another support tool in your toolbox

Do you need certain foods to practice Reiki? Nope.

Do you need to eat according to a chakra chart? Nope.

Can food help support your chakras? Absolutely.

Reiki can support your chakras.

Crystals can support your chakras.

Essential oils can support your chakras.

Food can support your chakras too.

You have choices.

Start where you are.
